Age spots and sun spots usually appear after years of sun exposure, often on the face, hands and forearms. At Seongsu Melting Clinic in Seongsu, Seoul, Dr. Park Kyung-min examines each spot before choosing a treatment, because "age spot" can mean several different things.
Flat spots and raised spots are treated differently, and a few spots should not be treated cosmetically at all until they have been checked.
What are age spots and sun spots?
The most common type is the solar lentigo: a flat, well-defined brown spot caused by long-term UV exposure. Unlike freckles, lentigines tend to be larger and do not fade in winter.
Another common growth is seborrheic keratosis, a raised, sometimes rough or waxy spot that ranges from light brown to dark. It is benign, but it sits on the surface of the skin and does not respond well to pigment-only lasers. Any spot that is growing quickly, bleeding, itching or irregular in color or shape needs a medical assessment first.
How we approach age spot removal at Seongsu Melting Clinic
For flat sun spots, the Miin Q-switched 1064nm laser is used at targeted settings to break up pigment. The spots usually darken, crust and then flake away. Low-energy toning may be added if there is background unevenness.
For raised spots such as seborrheic keratoses, the CO2 laser can remove the growth layer by layer with precise control. This leaves a small wound that heals over about a week or more and may stay pink for a while.

What to expect
Your visit begins with an examination and explanation. Treatment of individual spots is usually quick. Numbing may be used for CO2. After Miin laser, spots darken and flake over roughly a week or so. After CO2, a small scab forms and the area may look pink for several weeks.
Some spots clear in one session; some need a second. New spots can still develop with sun exposure over time. Pricing is explained at consultation.
Aftercare
- Keep CO2-treated spots moist with the ointment the clinic recommends
- Do not pick scabs or crusts
- Use sunscreen daily on treated areas, including the hands
- Cover treated spots with a small bandage if advised
- Contact the clinic if a spot becomes painful or shows signs of infection

Will age spots come back?
The treated spot often stays lighter, but new spots can appear with continued sun exposure. Sunscreen helps.
Is CO2 removal going to leave a scar?
CO2 removes tissue, so there is some risk of scarring or color change. Careful technique and aftercare lower that risk. Dr. Park will discuss this for your spots.
Can you treat spots on my hands?
Often, yes. Hands may heal more slowly than the face, and sun protection is important afterward.
